In our rush to capture the salaries and perks available to people who can bring in the money, we have increasingly left behind the concept of philanthropy--except when we trot it out once a year for National Philanthropy Day. If a person is a fundraiser, I have no objection to him/her calling themselves that. But my experience is that individuals who think of themselves first and foremost as fundraisers think of donors at ATM's where you just punch the right buttons and outcomes the cash. By and large, "serious fundraisers" think of donors as simply a problem to be solved, not a people with hopes, dreams and aspirations for a better world.
